Every person lives in his own world and knows it like his “pocket”. In this you find your way around well, can navigate and also compensate for some unforeseen things. There is a lot of security if you know the cause – effect relationship. This one is in turn able to intervene structurally. One could, for example, recognize causes of illness, production errors, relationship problems, etc., and thus eliminate the effects. But what about these so-called side effects. This term comes from system theory. This states that in a complex system, all activities have side effects, long-distance effects and time-delayed effects. Thus humans are no longer able to achieve desired results with interventions. Often the effects of past activities are shown in completely different contexts. These are then not explainable to us. To move in complex systems requires that you recognize the bigger picture. Is not possible for humans. A larger context becomes recognizable when one takes in different mental perspectives – away from one’s own subjectivity. A holistic approach is more effective.

In the first six episodes of Star Wars, power was still something that could be attacked and assigned. Fear is something we feel, we have or need resources, sometimes people play with us and the zeitgeist makes some things possible or not. In episode 7, power develops into something transcendent that we no longer know exactly who owns and where it is located. It is obviously something holistic, which is not recognizable in the individual parts. Everything points to a holistic construction.

The term “wholeness” is very often used by eco-activists. However, these address only a part – namely the environment, which is basically ok but just not holistic. Arthur Köstler introduced the concept of the holon in the 1960s. This is a unity or an entity, which always consists of a wholeness and a divisiveness. In our known biological universe, these would be, for example, cells and organs. On the one hand, cells are autonomous – that is, whole – and on the other hand, parts of organs. The arrangement of the parts can be imagined in breadth and depth. The wider a system is created, the more equal parts exist on one level and the deeper a system is, the more different elements are present. Depending on the level of consciousness, the individual part knows itself, possibly underlying levels, but hardly any above it.

In “Awakening of Power,” the all-encompassing holon is the power. This in turn has two parts – the bright and the dark side. Both sides have properties that are mutually known. At least everyone says that he is evil and claims to be the good at the same time. However, it might be that the power not only consists of these two parts, but contains more, previously unknown, parts. Now you can penetrate deeper into both sides. The bright side then contains holons like the Jedi, the Senate or the Resistance. Even with these parts, it goes further into the depth – so the Jedis are presented by the individual personalities of the Jedi Knights. These have different manifestations such as Mr. Yoda, Mr. Windu, Obi-Wan, Kenobi, etc. Once again in depth, each Jedi creature is composed of the body, the clothes and the laser sword. The sum of all these properties does not describe power. This is much more than their individual parts.

In a holarchical system, each member gives away at least a small part of himself in favor of a higher whole. This higher one creates something completely new from these “donations”, which did not exist in the individual parts. This process can also be described as transcending. The statement: “Mankind is transcending itself”, one would then have to understand as follows: Every earth-dweller gives something away from himself – this could be, for example, the ability to orient on the road. Every driver already has a navigation system and does not need it anymore. For this, a higher-level system is developing, it could be Google Maps, which then takes over the navigation and at the same time develops a new capability, eg. Traffic Management.

Just as the individual parts, in favor of a larger whole, give something away from themselves, there is also the opposite way. The Scrap collector Rey develops unimaginable abilities while fleeing the Millenium Hawk. Finn asks her, “Where did you learn to fly so well?” To which she replies, “I do not know.” This happens to us in our own lives every so often that we can do something without first knowing exactly where. The brain researchers would argue that this would be present in the unconscious through experience. On the other hand, we have to be able to do things that we have neither learned nor experienced in any way. Han Solo was known in the earlier episodes exclusively as a rationalist. In this episode, he concludes that “a mystical energy field holds good and evil together.” He probably does not even know how to come to this realization. Maz Kanata comes to a similar conclusion: “I know the power, it permeates us and surrounds all living things.”

It can be assumed that we humans are only parts of a larger larger whole, of which we just are not able to recognize it. Each of us gives something and gets something. Even this exchange is difficult to recognize. The ongoing digitization and the associated developments in artificial intelligence give us the opportunity to watch a holistic system in its development.

In the dark side of power we know the components of the Sith, the Empire, and the 1st order. The 1st order again contains the parts of the cyborgs, virtuals, humans and the robotics. A special role is played by the escaped clone warrior (FN2187) Finn. He is one of those creatures developed in Episode 2 “Clone Warrior Attack” on Kamino. Obviously it should have come to minimal deviations. This is because Finn develops feelings for those living things he should kill. The past life of Finn was a very uniform one. He was embedded in the communion of the clone warriors, with the result that he had little autonomy and self-determination.

A being who lives in a very strict, uniform communio has two possibilities of breaking it. If it contributes even more intensively to the communio, it leads to self-dissolution. Has one already seen in people with exaggerated altuistic behavior. Persons who sacrifice themselves for the community, dissolve themselves. The second alternative would be a distancing from the community and this is only about transcendence (see picture).

An autonomous being also has two possibilities to develop. It could become even more independent and distancing itself even more from the community – which also leads to a dissolution. It is absolutely impossible for people to live in complete autonomy. The other way is again the transcendence. In summary, it can be said that a transition from an autonomous to a communal existence or vice versa is only possible through transcendence. The extreme paths lead to each resolution. So Finn breaks out of his communio, the clone warriors, by developing autonomous abilities. A striking example of this is the scene in which he helps Poe to escape.

Somewhat larger things can arise when autonomous beings transcend into communal beings or vice versa, when uniform parts become self-dependent. Transcendence is thus the only chance of survival of elements (beings) in a System.
